Train Your Cat to Use the Toilet
Part 2 of 3
To train your cat how to use the toilet, you need to start leaving the toilet seat down. If you have a wife or are a woman, this is probably nothing new in your home, but it does need to be done even if you're not used to it.
Note: Leave the toilet lid up, but the seat down. Cats are not usually able to open the lid and then put down the seat. You need to do it for them. And while your cat won't be using the toilet in the early stages of this process, you need to get them used to being around the toilet right now.
To be sure that your guests know to leave the toilet lid up and the toilet seat down, consider placing a sticky note above the toilet explaining that you are doing this to train your cat to use the toilet. Already you have a conversation piece, as well as some friends who don't think the cat will ever use the toilet. You're about to prove them wrong!
In order to get your cat more used to the toilet, place its litter box beside the toilet. Your cat will begin getting used to being around the toilet and using the restroom for its waste. After your cat has begun using the litter box in the restroom right next to your toilet, begin raising the litter box 1-2 inches each day. This can be easily accomplished with books, like old phone books that are no longer needed.
So far:
- Your toilet lid is up and the toilet seat is down.
- The litter box is placed next to the toilet.
- You are raising the litter box 1-2 inches each day.
